Bingham's slow-burn career as gritty troubadour took a stellar turn when he won an Oscar for "The Weary Kind", his theme to Crazy Heart. This third album attempts no subsequent fancy crossover. Bingham and his band play a mix of sinewy country-rock and downbeat ballads, with Springsteen, Creedence and Townes Van Zandt among their touchstones. Bingham's gravelly vocals ooze experience and integrity, and songs such as "Depression" and "Direction of the Wind" cast an acute eye on the US's social decay.

”Junky Star” is lonely and wasted, filled with shaky guitar riffs, and a whiskey soaked voice. Ryan Bingham seems to be standing in the maddening windswept fog of a new morning wondering where he is, turning on his heals, determined to retrace his steps ... yet finding only what he’s conjured up in his own demented Topanga Canyon mind. ”Junky Star” is like the movie that exists within the move, dancing around the edges, filling up the margins, compressing everything, determined, ragged, and heartfelt.About the only thing that’s missing from this release, that dominated all of his others, is a sense of adventure ... ”Junky Star” captures a sense of place, a taking stock of everything he’s loved and lost, and how far afield things seem when you stop moving, look around, reach deep in your pockets, and find nothing but a spent matchbook from someplace you might have been. This being his third and most atmospheric album, feeling like a postcard from a life somewhere on the open road ... I for one, am waiting on chapter four. If you find yourself traveling the back roads, the roads truckers take to slip past the weigh-stations, and you see a guy hitching down by the off-ramp, pick up this road weary traveler, then sit back and listen to him as he pokes at the dashboard, never looking you in the eye, and telling you some magnificent stories.Review by Jenell Kesler
