Venus" is a 1969 song written by Dutch musician Robbie van Leeuwen. In 1970, the Dutch rock band Shocking Blue took the song to number one in nine countries. In 1986, the British female pop group Bananarama returned the song to number one in seven countries. The composition has been featured in numerous films, television shows and commercials, and covered dozens of times by artists around the world.

Shocking Blue is the debut studio album by the Dutch rock band Shocking Blue. It was released in November 1967 on Polydor. In Germany, the record was released in 1970 under the title Beat With Us. This was the only album with Fred de Wilde on lead vocal. Mariska Veres replaced de Wilde in the band's next album, At Home. All songs written by Robbie van Leeuwen, except where noted. Fred de Wilde - lead vocals. Robbie van Leeuwen - guitar, backing vocals. Klaasje van der Wal - bass guitar.

Venus (Shocking Blue song). Released in late 1969 as a single from the group's third album Scorpio's Dance (later also on reissues of the second album At Home), Shocking Blue's single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on 7 February 1970. RIAA certification came on 28 January 1970 for selling over one million copies in the US, garnering a gold record.

In Shocking Blue's home country, this never made it to After its success in the States, the song was re-released, but climbed no further that on the Dutch pop chart. Michael from Wien (vienna), Austria"Venus" and "Shocking Blues" also means personal nostalgia for me, as I was born in The Hague in the Sixties. In the meantime I have been living in Vienna for many years. In the sixties The Hague was the Liverpool of the Netherlands producing many internationally successful pop acts like the Golden Earring, Livin' Blues, Tee Set, Earth & Fire and of course Shocking Blue. Most the groups came from the neighbourhoods in the South-West, the same area where I grew up. However it was not a personal inspiration for me.
