Louis Armstrong's signing to the then-recently formed Decca Records at the age of 34 in 1935 was a turning point in his recording career, but not, in the eyes of jazz critics, a felicitous one. Armstrong's highly regarded Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings of the '20s were well behind him, and the pact with Decca, undertaken by his new manager Joe Glaser, was part of a campaign to make him a broad-based star entertainer, not just a great jazz trumpeter.
