Queen of Pentacles' taps into Vega's broad range of musical tastes, intertwining Dylan/Stones inspired guitar-driven songs with lush . A fan of hip hop as well, Vega samples the 50 Cent hit song "Candy Shop" for one of the more unique tracks on the album, "Don't Uncork What You Can't Contain.

Suzanne Vega (born Suzanne Nadine Vega on 11 July 1959 in Santa Monica, California) is an American singer-songwriter noted for her eclectic folk-inspired music. Two of Vega's songs (both from her second album Solitude Standing, 1987) reached the top 10 of various international chart listings: " Luka" and "Tom's Diner". Though born in California, Vega has lived most of her life in New York City. There, she attended the High School of the Performing Arts (the school seen in the feature film musical Fame), where she studied modern dance.

Vega spent the past few years writing songs on the road, recording parts of the album in Chicago, London, Prague, Los Angeles, and New York City. Now with Tales From the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles, Vega reassures us of her ability to mesmerize with unusual lyrical thoughts and arrangements. Vega, perhaps best known for her hits Luka and Tom’s Diner, is no stranger to being placed in the other category for songs that break the mainstream mold. But truly, to me, this is what makes her work most endearing. A lot of the songs have to do with the body and wealth or lack of it. The Queen of Pentacles in the song in this case is sort of greedy and the fool is the opposite of that – he is free and he has no possessions. The character in Song of the Stoic is someone who has worked hard for anything that he has and really feels it in his body, feels life in his body.

The four volumes in Suzanne Vega's Close-Up series revisited her catalog thematically with stripped-down charts. It appealed to her base of fans who patiently waited seven years for new material. The ten songs on Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles fits that bill. The set was produced by longtime associate and co-writer Gerry Leonard, and played by a weighty studio cast. The album isn't so much a change of musical direction as it is a classy revisioning of Vega's trademark sound.
Adele has cited her as an influence, and with Vega’s voice as clear and bright as ever, there’s no reason why her blend of poetic lyricism and folk-rock classicism shouldn’t resonate once more. Despite its Rick Wakeman-like title, Vega has kept things simple on her new album, Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles, to (mostly) positive effect. Crack in the Wall is evidence of what a good songwriter Vega is, hinting at deep emotions in words that describe nature scenes in a fairytale fashion. Attempts to sound contemporary don’t work so well - the samples on Don’t Uncork What You Can’t.
