Percy Sledge (born 25 November 1941 in Leighton, Alabama; died 14 April 2015 in Baton Rouge) was an American R&B and soul performer who most notably recorded the single "When a Man Loves a Woman" in 1966, an international top 40 hit that the RIAA has certified as gold. Having achieved his best successes in the mid-to-late 60s and early 70s with a series of emotional soul songs, in his later years he received the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Career Achievement Award and was inducted in 2005 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Percy Tyrone Sledge (November 25, 1941 – April 14, 2015) was an American R&B, soul and gospel singer. He is best known for the song "When a Man Loves a Woman", a No. 1 hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts in 1966. It was awarded a million-selling, Gold-certified disc from the RIAA.

Percy Sledge – When a Man Loves a Woman. They were his band-mates in a group called the Esquires Combo, whose song Why Did You Leave Me, Baby? had been transformed into When a Man Loves a Woman, largely through Sledge’s contributions. His 2004 album Shining Through the Rain presaged his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the following year. In 2007 he was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Delta Music Museum, in Ferriday, Louisiana. Sledge is survived by his second wife, Rosa, and by 12 children. Percy Tyrone Sledge, soul singer, born 25 November 1940; died 14 April 2015.

The Luxurama in Cape Town darkened, there was a momentary hush, then the audience exploded in a deafening roar as Percy Sledge walked on the stage. Commencing with his chart buster " My Special Prayer " he went on to perform for 45 thrilling electrifying minutes. Everyone of the 1300 seats was filled, people were sitting in the aisles and the happy audience screamed and cried, shouted and stamped, clapped and cheered for the King of Soul was here in South-Africa at last!
