Big Brother & the Holding Company is the debut album of Big Brother and the Holding Company, with Janis Joplin, their main singer. Recorded during three days in December 1966 for Mainstream Records, it was released in the summer of 1967, shortly after the band's major success at the Monterey Pop Festival. Columbia took over the band's contract and re-released the album, adding two extra tracks, and putting Joplin's name on the cover.

Janis Joplin and Big Brother performed there along with the Hare Krishna founder Bhaktivedanta Swami, Allen Ginsberg, Moby Grape, and Grateful Dead, donating proceeds to the Krishna temple. In early 1967, Joplin met Country Joe McDonald of the group Country Joe and the Fish. The band's debut studio album, Big Brother & the Holding Company, was released by Mainstream Records in August 1967, shortly after the group's breakthrough appearance in June at the Monterey Pop Festival. One month after the Winterland concert, Owsley Stanley recorded them at the Carousel Ballroom, released in 2012 as Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968.

The group's newly released album ‘Live At The Carousel Ballroom 1968’ is the first of the band's soundman Bear’s ‘Sonic Journals' collection to be released. Bear, whose real name was Owsley Stanley, was responsible for recording this show on June 23, 1968. Sadly, while still supervising the mastering of this release, Bear was in a fatal car accident (March 12, 2011). The release of this album marks the one year anniversary of his death and the project has been dedicated to his memory. This recording has been delivered the way Bear heard the band live.
