Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose members were good friends with Young, wrote Sweet Home Alabama as a southern man’s response to this song as well as the song Alabama from the Neil Young album Harvest. Young has said he is honored to be have his name featured in that song. In his 2012 memoir Waging Heavy Peace, Young wrote: Alabama richly deserved the shot Lynyrd Skynyrd gave me with their great record

Neil Young is the self-titled debut studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young following his departure from Buffalo Springfield in 1968, issued on Reprise Records. Some sources place the album's release date on January 22, 1969, while other sources have the release date as Young's 23rd birthday, November 12, 1968. It was then partially remixed and re-released in November 1969, but at no time has the album ever charted on the Billboard 200.

Young is mentioned in the line "I hope Neil Young will remember, a Southern man don't need him around anyhow. Lynyrd Skynyrd were big fans of Young. Sweet Home Alabama" was meant as a good-natured answer to this, explaining the good things about Alabama. In the liner notes for his greatest hits album Decade, Young wrote: "This song could have been written on a civil rights march after stopping off to watch Gone With The Wind at a local theater. Young was backed by his band Crazy Horse on this track: Danny Whitten - guitar Jack Nitzsche - piano Nils Lofgren - guitar Billy Talbot - bass Ralph Molina - drums.

Southern Man" is a song by Neil Young from his album After the Gold Rush. The album was released in 1970. An extended live version can be heard on the Crosby Stills Nash & Young album 4 Way Street. The lyrics of "Southern Man" are vivid, describing the racism towards blacks in the American South. In the song, Young tells the story of a white man (symbolically the entire white South) and how he mistreated his slaves.
