Album · 1968 · 8 Songs. Ray Barretto always gets us moving with his shimmying salsa beats, but of all this fabled percussionist's groovalicious works, few make us want to hit the dance floor quite like his scintillating forays into Latin soul on Acid. Swinging numbers like "A Deeper Shade of Soul," the self-explanatory "Soul Drummers," and the brilliant "The Teacher of Love" work a funky R&B angle into Barretto's Latin rhythms, while syncopated new twists on traditional tunes like "El Nuevo Barretto" remind us why he remains the king of Afro-Cuban jazz

Ray Barretto: Acid by John Ballon, published on October 31, 2003 at All About Jazz. Like the drug itself, Acid had a mind-expanding influence on everyone, allowing for a far more adventurous and eclectic edge to slip into New York's Latin music scene. A lot less psychedelic than its title and cover might lead you to believe, Acid remains one of the most far-out fusions of Latin and soul music ever conceived.
Ray Barretto (April 29, 1929 – February 17, 2006) was a Puerto Rican conga drummer and bandleader born in New York. Throughout his career as a percussionist, he played a wide variety of Latin music styles, as well as Latin jazz. His first hit, "El Watusi", was recorded by his Charanga Moderna in 1962, becoming the most successful pachanga song in the United States. In the late 1960s, Barretto became one of the leading exponents of boogaloo and what would later be known as salsa
