Gulag Orkestar is the debut album of Beirut. It was recorded in 2005 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is written in the booklet that the front and back photos were found in a library in Leipzig, torn out of a book. The original photographer was unknown to the creators of the album while it was recorded, but has since been discovered to be Sergey Chilikov. The album has received great critical acclaim and was later re-released to include the Lon Gisland EP.
He may have dug Gulag Orkestar, the debut album by Zach Condon aka Beirut. Beirut's received quite a bit of pre-release buzz. It could carry any style of music. Fixate for a second on the stuff he's doing on "Rhineland (Heartland)".
The lyrics, it must be said, are the album's most obvious flaw, clearly the work of a young, romantically inclined teen who has never been to Europe but has seen a lot of foreign art films about, like, Gypsies 'n' stuff. Ignore the clunky lyrics - easy enough to do since Condon is an unexpectedly appealing singer with a rich, mellifluous voice that, no kidding, recalls the great bel canto crooners of the pre-rock era (along with a little Nick Cave) - and Gulag Orkestar is an infinitely more appealing album.

However, Gulag Orkestar does fall flat in a few places. Postcards From Italy doesn’t quite nail the laid-back, lazy feeling it tries to produce, most likely due to Condon’s constant vibrato towards the end of his words. Bratislava takes a familiar march pattern and adds echoing vocals far in the background, but in the end is too repetitive and boring to really feel like it builds from intro to climax. The faults can be easily overlooked due to the rest of the album ranging from Excellent to Outstanding. Those in the market for something entirely different from the norm should pick up Beirut’s debut album. Top Tracks Mount Wroclai (Idle Days) Brandenburg Basically all of them but Postcards From Italy and Bratislava.
