The Violinaires have been an institution in Detroit gospel music since 1952, appearing under a variety of names - usually the Violinaires or the Fantastic Violinaires - and being led by a number of singers, including founder Willie Banks and Robert Blair, who led the group until his death in 2001, when he was replaced by pastor Danny Walker. The first version of the Violinaires was formed by Isaiah "Lil Shot" Jones, Leo Coney, and Wilson DeShields in 1952. By the time the Violinaires signed with the Chess subsidiary Checker in 1964, the group returned to gospel music and featured Robert Blair as the lead; Jones, Coney, and DeShields all remained in the band. The group stayed with Checker throughout the '60s and moved to Jewel in the '70s. This lineup held through the late '80s, when the group moved to Atlantic International Records to release the successful album The Pink Tornado.

Don’t Know Why was written by Jesse Harris which originally appeared on his 1999 album, Jesse Harris & the Ferdinandos. Jones then covered it for her debut 2002 album Come Away with Me, where it was released as the first single and hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song charted at 459 in Blender magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born. In New York City, you might have caught her (as I did) gigging with the JC Hopkins Biggish Band or playing solo for tiny audiences at The Living Room, a shy, beautiful nobody whose sudden and stupendous rise couldn’t have been predicted. Jones recorded her debut, Come Away With Me, with an acoustic trio on Blue Note Records. Among the album’s originals was a track written by her friend Jesse Harris: ‘Don’t Know Why,’ a quietly dazzling tribute to romantic indecision.
