Hasu Patel’s collection of traditional ragas for sitar are little invitations to the world, invitations to reflect on the deepest concept known to humankind: The Divine - the nature of which we acknowledge, from our various traditions, exists somewhere beyond thought and imagination. They are exquisite examples of the evocative, inviting qualities of this tradition and this instrument. A recording like Gayaki Sitar seems to remind us that this cultural dialogue is a beautiful thing, but let’s not co-opt eachother’s traditions so entirely into our own that we forget their original, deeper, purpose and meaning. This is what separates this album from the piles of other CDs that litter my desk, something the very laws of physics insist is impossible: That something can in fact be more than it is. The sound clearly indicates this, and immediately renders the listener speechless.

HASU PATEL, a disciple of sitar legend Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib, is one of the few world-class female artists performing today Classical Music on sitar, the most popular string instrument of India. She founded Sursangam School of Music, where students learn sitar, tabla and vocal music. Born in the culturally rich city of Baroda, India, Hasu began her musical studies in early childhood. At the age of 10, she made her first public appearance.

Genre: World: World Traditions. Ms. Patel is a very fine artist. Very unusual sound for her Gharana (school)- . the sound of her bridge is very reminiscent of a generation gone by. Very enjoyable.
