By the time Roy Orbison wrapped his resplendent pipes around "Mean Woman Blues," the raucous number had been around the block a couple of times. Elvis Presley debuted it in his 1957 Technicolor film Loving You, delivering it in a thrilling production number that was easily one of the musical's highlights. Elvis waxed his original in January or February of 1957; in September the eternally competitive Jerry Lee Lewis took his best shot at "Mean Woman Blues," pumping his piano in frisky boogie mode and adding an extra layer of frenzy (oddly, neither version charted). Six years later, Orbison rectified that injustice once and for all with a smash revival for Fred Foster's Monument Records (the Big O's home for all his major hits from 1960 to 1965) that was probably the strongest of the lot - no small accomplishment up against such killer precedents.
