My mom in particular has complained for years about not getting to hear me sing at Christmas, so I thought a few of you might like to hear what I've been singing the past several Christmases, hence the title of the album: "For Folk's Sake," as in our kinfolk.

by For Folk's Sake, 1 December 2011. The Christmas album comes with all sorts of pitfalls in which to fall headfirst or to stand in proudly, arms akimbo. Even the most earnest of performers can put out some jingly-jangly tune to suit the season of merriment. But the best Christmas records to my mind are the ones that, although the seasonal theme is still essential, are driven by the need to tell a good story and sing a good tune – from classics such as ‘Fairytale of New York’ to cult numbers like John Prine’s ‘Christmas in Prison’ (and its fantastic Emmy the Great cover). Darren Hayman’s ‘Lost In The Snow’ from this EP features on our For Folk’s Sake It’s Christmas 2011 compilation, which is being sold to raise money for the Integrated Cancer Centre at King’s College. This acoustic Avengers, if you will, varied album to album and so year to year. But each one featured a variety of big indie or small mainstream names, lending their hands to toned down and off-beat covers of classic Christmas tunes, as well as some new original tracks. For something new, instead, I recommend something entirely original for your Christmas listening. Personal favourites include Tom Williams’ ‘Christmas (So Much Better When You’re Here)‘, which is more a seasonal love-song than any else. I also really enjoy ‘I Am Christmas‘, by Laura Hocking, which tells the story of a girl who slept all the way through Christmas but insists it can’t have happened without her and all it’s family traditions and rigours. It has this rhythm and lilt to it that reminds me of a traditional folk song, or a sea shanty; it’s a fantastic listen.
