David Byrne and Fatboy Slim first collaborated on the 2010 Here Lies Love concept album, and the resulting musical was a success in 2013 at the Off-Broadway Public Theater in New York, and it's been remounted in 2014 A weird premise that ultimately hangs together, the story is about the disco- (and shoe-) loving Imelda Marcus and her humble childhood, rising. to become the powerful First Lady of Philippines and descending as the People Power Revolution took control.

However, when developing the project, David Byrne decided early that it would contain no mention of Marcos’s infamously vast shoe collection. Elephant in the room duly dealt with, Byrne called Fatboy Slim to help him to create something that avoids the evening-length arc of a musical or opera in favour of the rise and fall of the DJ’s beats and tracks in a dance club. The pair’s navigation of the narrative is impeccable, as Marcos uses her steely resolve to rise above her troubled childhood. Byrne harnesses a roll call of mostly female vocalists to verbalise Marcos’s marriage to President.

Mr.Death Mr.Death
I am a fan of David Byrne. I am a fan of Fatboy Slim. I even think the concept and idea behind this album are really good. And it sounds like a great collaboration! However I found it really hard to get behind this release. In fact I find it pretty much unlistenable. It's difficult to put my finger on why this is so...Given Fatboy Slim is behind the rhythms here, I was expecting a nice fullness behind the tracks, and interesting beats. The mix of the songs does not present any of the beats as the star of the track (fair enough really) but the result is fairly generic, sounding like a beat from a sample CD tacked onto a singer's demo track. The aim here is a disco representation of the subject's life. Compared to hits of 1970s disco, the songs are far from classic. Again, the performance and tonality has none of the funk, pizazz, or just that intangible raw goodness that made 70s disco exciting. No funky bass lines, no vivacious violins, no divas! I think this was a grand experiment in remote collaboration, sending files back and forth over the internet. A worthy goal to bring many interesting artists into the project. But at the core I feel what got left out in this scenario was that great gelling, that great interplay and emotion of a band performing as one. Despite great singers on the album, the performances are underwhelming. Combined with unmemorable songs, it's a miss for me.
