Mikhail Petrenko, Bass. Männerchor des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. John Axelrod makes his debut at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with a gripping programme. The main item is Dmitri Shostakovich’s seldom performed Symphony no. 13, subtitled Babi Yar (Mariss Jansons’s recording of the same symphony with the Bavarian RSO was awarded a Grammy in 2006). The Thirteenth Symphony is a harrowing Requiem with Shostakovich’s distinctive penchant for satire and the grotesque – and a heroic challenge for the Russian bass Mikhail Petrenko and the Bavarian Radio men’s choir. The concert will be initiated with Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Unfortunately, Yannick Nézet-Séguin had to hand over the leadership of the concerts this week due to illness.
Kirill Kondrashin conducted the 1962 premiere after Yevgeny Mravinsky had declined the assignment under pressure; Vitaly Gromadsky sang the solo part alongside the combined choruses of the RSFSR State Academy and Gnessin Institute and the Moscow Philharmonic. Kondrashin gave two performances of the Thirteenth Symphony; a third was scheduled for 15 January 1963. However, at the beginning of 1963 Yevtushenko reportedly published a second, now politically correct version of Babi Yar twice the length of the original. The length of the new version can be explained not only by changes in content but also by a noticeable difference in writing style. Sergei Aleksashkin, bass; Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks conducted by Mariss Jansons on EMI Classics, recorded in 2005.
Its primary concert venues are the Philharmonie am Gasteig and the Herkulessaal in the Residenz. The orchestra was founded in 1949, with members of an earlier radio orchestra in Munich as the core personnel.
