The title track of D'Angelo’s debut album is not a love song about a dark-skinned woman-even though it may seem that way at first listen. He’s actually professing his love for marijuana in the same personification style Rick James used for his 1978 classic, Mary Jane. D'Angelo’s debut single peaked at on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, as well as receiving a Grammy nomination in 1996 for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. He said, Hold up. Can we sit with this for a second? Maybe another fifteen minutes went by before he finally went into the booth and started doing the backgrounds, and that’s how the title track, Brown Sugar, came to be. It was like it was too good to be true, because that song came out of twenty minutes and a mistake. You have to realize, at the time, nothing else had that sound.

With his debut album, Brown Sugar, the 21-year-old D'Angelo crashed down some of those barriers. D'Angelo concentrates on classic versions of soul and R&B, but unlike most of his contemporaries, he doesn't cut and paste older songs with hip-hop beats; instead, he attacks the forms with a hip-hop attitude, breathing new life into traditional forms. Not all of his music works - there are several songs that sound incomplete, relying more on sound than structure.
Brown Sugar is the debut album of American R&B singer D'Angelo. It was released on July 4, 1995, by EMI Music. Recording sessions for the album took place from 1994 to 1995 at Battery Studios and RPM Studios in New York City and at the Pookie Lab in Sacramento. Production, instrumentation, arrangements, and songwriting were primarily handled by D'Angelo, who employed both vintage recording equipment and modern electronic devices. Brown Sugar contains themes of love and romance, and features a fusion of contemporary R&B and traditional soul music, along with elements of funk,.
Brown Sugar, D’Angelo’s debut, became an important forebear of what’s now called neo-soul. Released before Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite (1996) and Erykah Badu’s Baduizm (1997), D’Angelo changed the sound of R&B while paying homage to its pioneers: Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield and the like. The success of Brown Sugar paved the way for artists like Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, and Alicia Keys to break into the mainstream and achieve their own levels of fame. It harkened back to the essence of soul and jazz music, live records cut at the Village Vanguard or Five Spot. The title track and the album felt honest and organic; you could feel the lush instrumentation, the sincerity in the lyrics, the warmth of the keys. This wasn’t R&B purposely intended for younger ears; Brown Sugar was grown folks music, it just so happened that a 21-year-old created it.
