Erma Vernice Franklin (March 13, 1938 – September 7, 2002) was an American gospel and Soul singer. Franklin was the elder sister of American singer/musician Aretha Franklin. Franklin's best known recording was the original version of "Piece of My Heart", written and produced by Bert Berns, and recorded in 1967, for which she was nominated for a Grammy Award. A cover version of the same song was recorded the following year by Big Brother and the Holding Company, with the lead vocal by Janis Joplin.
As with the early work of her sister Aretha Franklin, it left the impression that she and/or her label didn't quite know how to harness her vocal talents. There was some passable pop with a tinge of rock and R&B that was far more notable for the vocals than the material; sub-Shirelles style music ("What Kind of Girl (Do You Think I Am?)", and far too much in the way of orchestrated standards that took her away from the R&B sensibilities that were her greatest strengths.
Erma Franklin was born in 1938 in Shelby, MS, but was raised - with her sisters, Aretha and Carolyn - in Detroit, MI. The son of the legendary preacher, gospel musician, and civil rights activist Rev. . Franklin, Erma grew up singing in the church, like so many other R&B and soul greats of the time. After recording backing vocals with her sister, Erma got the chance in 1962 to cut her debut LP. Though she would only record one more LP and retire from music entirely in the 1970s, this debut shows a singer just as talented as her more famous sister.
Cornbread Records present a reissue of Erma Franklin's debut album, Her Name Is Erma, originally released in 1962. During her childhood Erma and her sisters Aretha and Carolyn sang at New Bethel Baptist Church Erma Franklin sang the original version of "Piece of My Heart", which was a top 10 Soul hit in the . and rose to number 62 on the . Billboard Hot 100 chart. For 25 years, Erma worked for the Boysville Holy Cross Community Center, a Detroit organization that helps homeless and disadvantaged minority children. Franklin died of throat cancer in Detroit, Michigan on September 7, 2002 at age 64. She is interred at Detroit's historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
She released her first album, Her Name Is Erma, in 1962, but - like Aretha - she failed to find immediate success. After her contract lapsed, she spent five years as featured vocalist for the R&B singer Lloyd Price, then fell back on her academic background and became an administrator with IBM computers. In 1967, as Aretha's career broke through, Erma was tempted back to the studio by the influential New York producer, composer and arranger Bert Berns, whose work with the Drifters, Garnett Mimms, and Freddy Scott had shaped an intense "uptown" form of soul music.
