Hindemith composed seven string quartets and like so much of his vast output, which took in almost every conceivable musical genre, they are rarely heard nowadays in the concert hall. The Second and Third Quartets date from 1918 and 1920, and between them Hindemith's style shifted radically. The Second, which Hindemith wrote while serving in the German army, follows on from where Brahms, and occasionally Reger, left off. The much more austere and dissonant Third, meanwhile, was one of his early ventures into "New Objectivity". As the Amar Quartet's performance shows, the Third should be a regular part of the 20th-century quartet repertory.

As an elite string player, whose Amar Quartet was one of Europe's most exploratory chamber groups, Hindemith was perfectly placed to write his powerful sequence of string quartets. One of the greatest quartets of its time, the technically sophisticated No. 5, Op. 32 reveals Hindemith as a master of the medium.
Hindemith's seven string quartets were produced in different phases of his compositional development and all reflect his experience as a distinguished and experienced string player. Influenced both by Brahmsian late-Romanticism and by the catastrophic events of the First World War, the imaginative String Quartet No. 1 reflects the composer's concern to both extend and honour traditional forms. Cast in the form of a suite, the tempestuous and beautiful String Quartet No. 4 remains Hindemith’s most popular and performed quartet. kHz, 24-bit PCM – Naxos Studio Masters
The second quartet at times veers off into wildly chromatic modulations worthy of Max Reger, and some dissonant counterpoint that is fairly experimental, though these excursions are balanced with episodes of unclouded tonality and playful repartée. The third quartet is even more sophisticated, offering a mix of serious thematic argumentation and lively exchanges between the players, and revealing a more consistent and organic approach to developing material. The Amar Quartet, named after the quartet Hindemith founded in 1922, is outstanding in its interpretation of Hindemith's changeable.
The Hungarian composer György Ligeti published three string quartets throughout his life: two string quartets proper (1953–54, 1968) and a student piece from 1950 published towards the end of Ligeti's life. The first two string quartets proper represent both his early period, inspired by Béla Bartók, and middle period, which was largely micropolyphonic
