Our Man in Paris is a 1963 jazz album by saxophonist Dexter Gordon. The album's title refers to where the recording was made, Gordon (who had moved to Copenhagen a year earlier) teaming up with fellow expatriates Bud Powell and Kenny Clarke, both Parisian residents, and native Parisian Pierre Michelot. Powell, Clarke and Michelot, under the name The Three Bosses, had played together often in Paris since Powell moved there in 1959.

I thought I might be able to pass this one up-not close enough to the culmination of Dexter's resurgence, too late in Bud's career, too far from the Blue Note studios, too dependent on a French (or expatriate) rhythm section.
Our Man In Paris was Dexter’s first Blue Note message from France. John Fordham described it as a tenor-sax tour de force from a key figure bridging bebop and its swing predecessor. Dexter’s notes are hard and precise, in elongated runs. Dexter in Paris, 1964. Hi Dex, I’m a big fan from England. No, not New England, the old one. Can I have your autograph? I’ve got your new Blue Note Our Man In Paris with me, brought it all the way from England every time I see a Dexter Gordon album I remember the history with Miles Davis, that he implied with Miles Davis clothes, saying that he’s is out of style, that he have to let the beard gro. his is bulling, man! Our Man in Paris is all the evidence you need. Gordon made a bunch of terrific records for Blue Note from 1961 to 1964. Some say Go! from 1962, with pianist Sonny Clark, is the best of the bunch, and I can't really argue with that. But Our Man in Paris is every bit its equal, based largely on the strength of three songs and the presence of seminal bebop pianist Bud Powell. As the title implies, Our Man in Paris was recorded in the City of Lights. It's a simple bop quartet with Gordon on sax, Powell on piano, American Kenny Clarke on drums and Frenchman Pierre Michelot on bass. Funny thing about Our Man in Paris. I've owned the record (and now the CD) for decades, but it's not one I go to often. And yet once I do play the album, I wind up listening to it over and over. If it's not in your collection, it should be. Gordon is one of the all-time best boppers, and Paris is arguably his best recording.
