She woke at three with a thumping heart: she had dreamed once more of the night they met (19th of May, 1928, Chateau de Chaalis, Seine-et-Marne). He raises her gently into a chair. She tells him how to make a sling for her arm using a tea towel. In the room he had left, an album of photographslLay spilled across the floor. They sit facing each other at the kitchen table. He notices she is missing a finger. She quietly makes her way down the stairs as he rummages away in the room.

Grand Salvo mixes up the feel of the record with tracks that seem to throw the world into slow motion, such as She Stands in the Dark for a Long Time. Others, like She Woke at Three with a Thumping Heart: She Had Dreamed Once More of the Night They Met. (19th of May, 1928, Chateau de Chaalis, Seine-et-Marne), have a more Sufjan Stevens feel, with upbeat and quirky instrumentation. The pitch perfect harmonies combined with woeful vocals remind me of Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear. One of the album’s highlights is He raises her gently into a chair

Grand Salvo is the solo project of Melbourne musician Paddy Mann. His sixth studio album Slay Me in My Sleep is 1 of only 9 Australian releases to have made the 2012 Australian Music Prize Shortlist. Yet no matter the outcome, Grand Salvo’s Slay Me in My Sleep is already a winner, striking a blow for any album where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Slay Me in My Sleep is a concept album, a love story that weaves through time and imagination as a young would-be burglar becomes infatuated with a photograph. Music Feeds: Congratulations on Slay Me in My Sleep being selected to the AMP shortlist. Grand Salvo: Thank you very much. It’s an exciting surprise.

Grand Salvo’s 6th album, Slay Me In My Sleep is music to get lost in. Over 16 elaborately titled songs and three acts, Paddy Mann tells the story of an old woman who falls in love with a wayward boy through an old photograph. While this could have easily veered into self-indulgence territory, the end result is haunting and delicate. Like most concept albums, there is a cohesive sound through all of the tracks and they blend into one another. A medieval style flute wafts through album opener ‘The Old Woman and the Boy’ and reappears throughout the record.
