After cutting records with the Harlem Hamfats in Chicago during the years 1937 and 1938, Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon made his final recordings in New York City in 1939 and 1940 with bands that included trumpeters Jonah Jones and Henry "Red" Allen, Ellingtonians Barney Bigard and Wellman Braud, and veteran pianist Lil Hardin Armstrong.

Profile: Chicago jazz band formed in 1936. Initially, they mainly provided backup music for jazz and blues singers, such as Johnny Temple, Rosetta Howard, and Frankie Jaxon, for Decca Records. Their first record, "Oh! Red", became a hit, securing them a Decca contract for fifty titles, and they launched a successful recording career performing danceable music. The group's inclusion in the dirty blues genre is due to such songs as "Gimme Some of that Yum Yum" and "Let's Get Drunk and Truck".

FRANKIE Half-Pint JAXON. Drag acts are not usually associated with The Blues, but in the Speakeasies of Harlem and Chicago, during the ‘Roaring 20s’, it was a case of ‘anything goes’. Gladys Bentley wore a top-hat and tux as she charmed the customers of New York clubs, and in Chicago, Frankie ‘Half Pint’ Jaxon would amaze his audiences as he appeared in sparkly dresses and wild wigs, while singing some extremely rude songs full of ‘double entendres’. Frankie 'Half Pint' Jaxon Discography. These 24 tracks, of variable quality, represent Frankie’s outrageous stage act from the mid 20s, and are some of the earliest ‘Hokum’ Blues. In 1937 and ’38, Frankie recorded several times with Kansas Joe McCoy ‘s band The Harlem Hamfats, featuring Ransom Knowling on bass, with songs like ‘Wet It’, ‘The Dirty Dozens’ and ‘Take It Easy, Greasy’ continuing his Hokum tradition.

Despite their name, the Harlem Hamfats were not from Harlem, but were based in Chicago, and were put together by record producer and entrepreneur J. Mayo Williams simply for the purpose of making records, perhaps the first group to be so created. None of the members of the band were actually from New York
