He dumped every Smile song and song-fragment he could find onto his laptop, took them to Wilson's house and watched as Wilson proceeded to phone no less an authority than original lyricist Van Dyke Parks when he needed help remembering lyrics. The album ends with a suite of Wilson's most idiosyncratic music. I'm In Great Shape/I Wanna Be Around/Workshop" form a kind of bizarre interlude for Smile, wherein Wilson pumps up the virtues of "eggs and grits" and wanting to be around when "someone breaks your heart," over the strains of saws and drills.
The set focuses on abandoned recording sessions from their unfinished 1966–67 album Smile which – if completed – would have followed the group's 11th studio album Pet Sounds. It features comprehensive session highlights and outtakes, while the first 19 tracks comprise an approximation of what the completed album might have sounded like.
The white whale of '60s record-making, the Beach Boys' aborted SMiLE album gradually gained a legend that not only inflated its rumored importance and complexity, but gave credence to an odd notion - that completing it, then or ever, was impossible. In truth, SMiLE should have been released and forgotten, reissued and reappraised, and finally remastered for the digital era and ushered into the rock canon ever since Brian Wilson halted work on it in May 1967 (after an exhausting 85 recording sessions)
Brian Wilson Presents Smile (also referred to as Smile or the abbreviation BWPS) is the sixth studio album by Brian Wilson, released in September 2004. It began as a series of concert performances which were later adapted for a 2005 direct-to-video concert film of the same name The project was originally conceptualized in 1966 as Smile, a studio album recorded by the Beach Boys and written in collaboration between Wilson and lyricist Va. .
After finishing Pet Sounds, Brian set about creating an album that would capture all the greatest developements he'd made in symphony pop. Smile started out but never saw the light of day due to Wilson's breakdown. However certain songs were completed, such as Good Vibrations, Heroes and Villians and Cabin Essence and these impressed all who listened. But everyone was left waiting for over thirty years for Brian to finish what he'd started.
In interviews to promote Smile, Brian Wilson has concentrated on the happy, humorous qualities of the music, which are evident. However, there is also a clear and beautiful melancholy in Brian Wilson's voice and throughout the album eg. on 'Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine' and 'Surf's U. The lyrics to 'You Are My Sunshine' have been altered to past tense, adding a reflective somberness.
An essential listening experience if you’re a Beach Boys fan, this feels like a complete album. Brian and his band usually do a good job of recreating old SMiLE tapes with adding something new to most of them as original was missing many lyrics and melodies. Even Brian’s deteriorated voice doesn’t bother me too much or the weaker harmonies, as the songs still feel fresh, but the annoying weakness of this release is the production is too clean and arrangments feel.
Instead, Smiley Smile was released, and the original master tapes for Smile were left to gather dust while it’s cult reputation grew due to a series of bootlegs, from which the genius of the album could be heard. In 2003, the album was finally properly recorded by Brian Wilson and his band, and the long wait was over. After listening to this pretty much constantly for about two weeks, it is clear that the wait was well worth it. The Songs: 1. Our Prayer/Gee
Summary: Well, better 37 years late than never. Originally intended to be the Beach Boys' 1967 follow-up to their legendary 'Pet Sounds,' 'Smile' was finally recorded as originally intended in April 2004 by Wilson and his current band, including co-songwriter Van Dyke Parks. Record Label: Nonesuch.
