The Blue Mask is the eleventh solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed. It was the first album released after Reed had left Arista Records and returned to RCA Records. The album was released around Reed's 40th birthday, and covers topics of marriage and settling down, alongside themes of violence, paranoia, and alcoholism. Reed and Robert Quine's guitars were mixed separately in the right and left stereo channels respectively.

Lou Reed released 'The Blue Mask' in February 1982. Not counting the great live album made in 1974, Rock 'n' Roll Animal, the records he released after the one-two punch of Transformer and Berlin in 1972 and 1973, respectively, were pretty forgettable. Coney Island Baby (from 1976) and Street Hassle (1978) showed signs of the old spark that drove Reed when he led the Velvet Underground in the '60s.
