The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the debut solo album by American singer and rapper Lauryn Hill. It was released on August 25, 1998, by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records. After touring with her former group Fugees, Hill became involved in a romantic relationship with Jamaican entrepreneur Rohan Marley, and shortly after, became pregnant with their child. This pregnancy, as well as other circumstances in her life, inspired Hill to make a solo album.
Hill recorded most of the album at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studios in Kingston, Jamaica. At the time, she was romantically involved with Rohan Marley, Bob’s son, and later became pregnant with his child. The album’s lyrics touch on her pregnancy as well as the tensions within the Fugees. The neo-soul record modernized gospel music in the eye of the public, and the candor of its reflection of Hill’s reality and the perspective of a black woman was unprecedented. Sadly her first studio release would also be her last.
This is what separates Lauryn Hill from her male contemporaries, and why it feels that the album almost demands to be more rooted in song than verse. Rather than an iteration of Nas, she is Stevie Wonder merged with Joni Mitchell over classic East Coast beats. On Miseducation, Lauryn Hill demonstrates that she was one of the coldest MCs of her era. It has always been the case, however, that a woman could rhyme ridiculous and still never be considered the best of them all. In a way, it didn’t matter.
The GRAMMY® Award-winning artist will kick off the North American summer leg of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 20th Anniversary World Tour on July 5 in Virginia Beach, VA. Tickets and VIP experiences go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, April 20 at 10am local time at LiveNation. More details will be announced soon, including international dates, as well as the full lineup with Special Guest performers at each.
Listen free to Lauryn Hill – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (Intro, Lost Ones and more). The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the debut solo album studio by Lauryn Hill. Released August 25, 1998, the album swept the Grammy Awards in 1999, being nominated for 10 and winning five. As of 2009, the album has sold over 19 million copies worldwide and over 10 million copies in the US alone, with the RIAA giving it Diamond status. Background In 1997, Hill began production on an album that would eventually become The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Hill’s first solo album provided a sharp counterpoint by injecting the perspective of a young black woman dealing with identity and sexuality. The response to it was on was a juggernaut, earning five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. She put her Fugees past behind her, seizing the spotlight to showcase her rapping skills and amplify her emotional singing voice. To understand the significance of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, it’s important to remember what mainstream hip-hop was like in 1998. Materialism and misogyny were rampant, fanned by music videos that presented women as objects or conquests.
