The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus.

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is a studio album by American jazz musician Charles Mingus, released on Impulse! Records in 1963. The album consists of a single continuous y written as a ballet-divided into four tracks and six movements. The album was recorded on January 20, 1963 by an eleven-piece band. Mingus has called the album's orchestral style "ethnic folk-dance music". Mingus's perfectionism led to extensive use of studio overdubbing techniques.

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of the greatest achievements in orchestration by any composer in jazz history. Charles Mingus consciously designed the six-part ballet as his magnum opus, and - implied in his famous inclusion of liner notes by his psychologist - it's as much an examination of his own tortured psyche as it is a conceptual piece about love and struggle. It veers between so many emotions that it defies easy encapsulation; for that matter, it can be difficult just to assimilate in the first place

Charles Mingus (22nd April 1922 – 5th January 1979) was an American jazz bassist, composer, bandleader, and occasional pianist from Los Angeles. He was also known for his activism against racial injustice. Mingus' legacy is notable: he is ranked among the finest composers and performers in jazz, and recorded many highly regarded albums. Dozens of musicians passed through his bands and later went on to impressive careers. His songs - though melodic and distinctive - are not often recorded by later musicians, due in part to their unconventional nature.

For me: still the best album by Mr. Mingus. Compared to other contemporary jazz releases a very focused, organized and composed example of advanced music of the early Sixties. If you can afford it, make sure to catch the stereo version and - if possible - a pre-1974 copy.

My copy is identical to a tee right down to the runout etchings, but the labels list the catalog as "AS-35" omitting the "-A" from the end (as well as on B-side, respectively). Any info on the variations on this press?

An ambitious project that demands a lot from the listener. Labelled as "ethnic folk-dance music" there's elements of blues, flamenco and ballet. I would only really recommend this if you like your Jazz at the more Avant-Garde end of the spectrum.
