Reality TV- A Brief History. It’s amazing to see how far technology has come in just the last 100 years. Television, which seems like an amenity we could have never been without, didn’t begin in the US until 1939. The emphasis of reality television is on intense emotionality, exaggeration and sensationalism. It has been said to be historically rooted in the "penny press" of the 1830’s the "dime novels" of the 1870’s and the "yellow journalism" of the early 20th century. Such programming is typically driven by four common elements: profits, politics, education and entertainment.

Reality television has become one of the most popular forms of television in media today. This isn’t only true for recently released reality television shows but is also true for some of the more historic television programs based on reality. More than ever, reality television is popular across a variety of genres. We mentioned earlier with shows like Big Brother or MTV’s The Real World, that the foundation of what made the program ‘reality television’ was very clear. However, in using the example of Steve Irwin’s The Crocodile Hunter, this isn’t the case.

Reality television has become an important part of the entertainment industry. And in many cases, reality show fans can rival those of scripted shows in number and dedication. Over the years, many people have come to regard reality shows with disdain. Sure, there are drunken parties, tossed glasses of wine, and proverbial back-stabbings, but there's more to the genre than that. Plus, what's wrong with a little drama here and there? INSIDER compiled a list of the unscripted shows on TV that we feel represent the best of the bunch.

Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents purportedly unscripted real-life situations, often starring unknown individuals rather than professional actors. Reality television came to prominence in the late 1990s and the early 2000s with the global successes of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother, all of which became global franchises

Q5 - Reality TV appeals to some because it shows eligible males dating women. it uses exotic locations. it shows average people in exceptional circumstances. it can turn ordinary people into celebrities. Q6 - Pop Idol turns all its participants into celebrities. is more likely to turn its participants into celebrities than Big Brother. is less likely to turn its participants into celebrities than Big Brother. Q7 - The term 'reality television' is inaccurate for all programs. just for Big Brother and Survivor. for talent and performance programs.

This is a list of reality television series, by general type, listed with the date of their premiere. A few details are added for some shows that don't have their own article. See reality television for further descriptions. This film, television or video-related list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it with reliably sourced additions. In this genre, camera crews follow the daily interactions of people in ordinary places, such as airports or restaurants, or follow people in a specific profession.
