The Venezuelan six-piece Los Amigos Invisibles know this, which is probably why on their third album they left the worldbeat cul-de-sac of David Byrne's Luka Bop label in favor of the less internationally specific realm of house music, teaming up with Nuyorican dons Masters at Work to produce The Venezuelan Zinga Son, Vol. 1. But fortunately for the group, Louie Vega and Kenny Dope refuse to just rub them down with house grooves and send them on their way. In fact, contrary to what most folks would expect from an album bearing the iconic MAW logo, most of the tracks here are light-footed.

Los Amigos Invisibles generate a sweaty and unremittingly cheerful fusion of dancefloor styles both homegrown and imported. To its detriment, their third album drafts in New York's Masters at Work, the grand old men of dad-house, to man the production desk. Presumably enlisted to raise the band's profile among the dance set, the duo gloss too many tracks with a sheen of all-purpose, bar-friendly voguishness. Ease Your Mind, an excessively slick bit of retro disco, makes you feel you should be drinking overpriced rum-based cocktails somewhere.

But Zinga Son Vol. 1 isn’t just good for an inspired Paul Reubens moment. You can listen to a song like Playa Azul lounging by the pool, a bright colored cocktail in one hand while your free hand snaps to the flittering Latin rhythms. The songs on Zinga Son Vol. 1 tend to spill into each other, which leads to some interesting transitions such as when the drifty voices that close Majunche usher in the speedy percussion, boiling organ and soloing guitar of Mambo Chimbo. Later on the album, the traditional Latin sound of Calne fades into into the thudding funk sprawl of Superfucker, the album’s catchiest offering.
