Errol Garner Plays Gershwin and Kern is a reissue of material previously issued in Europe on Bulldog, MPS and Polydor. Either way, the material is quite excellent, often adventuresome and some of his best studio sides. Included here from 2/5/68 and never issued before is a brief "Nice Work If You Can Get It" with Garner singing along to himself - it's a wonderful gem of a private moment. Backup is Eddie Calhoun or Ike Isaacs on bass, Kelly Martin or Jimmie Smith on drums and Jose Mangual, congas. This was the first domestic issue of this material.

Erroll Louis Garner (June 15, 1923 – January 2, 1977; some sources say b. 1921) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his swing playing and ballads. His best-known composition, the ballad "Misty", has become a jazz standard. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6363 Hollywood Blvd.

Erroll Garner's perfectly executed piano performances of these classic tunes speak of the love and dedication he had on his craft. The Liner Notes state that "Jimmy Rowles calls Erroll Garner "Ork," which is short for orchestra and that is what Garner is to pianist Rowles - an entire orchestra all by himself. The media people described him as "the man for whom the piano was invented.
