As musicologist Wayne Marshall writes in his essay on the album: "Where We Come From" gives voice, as the best reggae does, to the contradictions of life in a society rife with inequities and yet so rich. Jamaican superstar Popcaan returns with his long awaited sophomore album, Forever. In the time since his early days as Vybz Kartel’s protege and his breakthrough debut album Where We Come From, he has toured with Drake, been sampled by Kanye West, had mainstream hits with Jamie xx and Gorillaz, and released a stream of singles that continue to delight his dedicated fan base in the Caribbean and beyond.
The album shows musical growth from her prior album, which also reflected the expressional art that showcased Monae's abilities and allowed her to stand out from many artists during this time. The album enforces smooth dancing that requires rhythm to fully embrace every sound including the beats Popcann creates with his voice and runs. Having been sampled and referenced by Drake, Popcaan’s vocals were unfortunately scrapped for Drizzy’s single Controlla. That hasn’t hindered his ascent, mind. As he remains under the Mixpak banner it’s clear Popcaan – once a protege of Vybz Kartel – is enjoying the fruits that come with being dancehall’s poster boy on Forever.
2014’s Where We Come From was a big feat in its own right, as many dancehall artists tend to focus on putting out hit singles rather than complete bodies of work. And though it was never officially released, Popcaan’s version of Drake’s Controlla in 2016 helped make the single a summer hit-further boosting the anticipation for his sophomore album, Forever. This year he finally delivered the project we’d been waiting for. From Body So Good to Lef My Gun, Popcaan offers up an album full of love songs and gunman tunes, which the Jamaican artist somehow manages to balance effortlessly.
