Motherlode is a 1988 James Brown compilation album. Created as a follow-up to the successful 1986 compilation In the Jungle Groove, it similarly focuses on Brown's funk recordings of the late 1960s and early 1970s. It includes live performances and remixes as well as studio recordings, most of them previously unissued. Writing in 2007, critic Robert Christgau called it "the finest of the classic comps".

During the mid- and late '80s, after Brown and Polydor parted ways, the label began to reissue his work, some of which had been out of print for close to a decade. Motherlode is one of the finest compilations. Coming a few years after In the Jungle Groove, a compilation effort that culled some of Brown's harder-edged 1969-1971 tracks, this covers 1969-1973 and has the smoothness of a regular release effort.

Motherlode ‎(LP, Comp). This is an expensive album but it hasn't been taken care of properly. On two copies already I found that the discs are hollow in the centre, meaning that if you play side two, the hole in the middle of the disc rises almost to the top of the centre spindle (classic Technics 1200). Same goes for the second disc. Reissue in march 2019 on 2XLP, with 3 new songs.
