Cass Elliot (born Ellen Naomi Cohen; September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974), also known as Mama Cass, was an American singer and actress, best known as a member of the Mamas & the Papas. After the group broke up, she released five solo albums. In 1998, she was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her work with the Mamas & the Papas.

Cass Elliot is the fourth studio album released by Cass Elliot and the first album recorded for RCA Records. The album was recorded in late 1971 at RCA’s Music Center of the World in Hollywood at 6363 Sunset and originally released in February 1972. It was produced by Lewis Merenstein and conductor Benny Golson conducted and arranged the album. With RCA granting her artistic freedom, Elliot pursued a more pared down, sophisticated sound for her first album with the label. Most of the songs were performed live in the studio. Elliot chose mostly standards.

Cass Elliot's departure from ABC Dunhill Records and their bubblegum marketing of her was probably the greatest career move that this awesome vocalist ever made. RCA obviously had better things in mind for her, treating her with the same sort of care that they bestowed on Harry Nilsson. The company let this pair of world-class vocalists choose their own material and brought them together with great musicians and arrangers. The end result was possibly Elliot's finest solo album. She was certainly more comfortable with the material

Cass Elliot had agreed to a three-album deal as a solo artist with Dunhill Records less than a month after her split with the Mamas & the Papas. Elliot chose John Simon as producer to help her steer the album. She had liked his work with The Band and found him to be the perfect person to work with. The album itself, is very much a concept album. While working with the Mamas & the Papas, Elliot felt severely limited in her desire to try different musical styles and took this album as that opportunity. The album contains touches of country, blues, rock, jazz, gospel, and bluegrass. When interviewed about the split, she told the Los Angeles Free Press, "I have a lot of things inside me to sing and I can't expect the others to wait around until I have got things out of my system.

Cass Elliot, born as Ellen Naomi Cohen and also referred to as Mama Cass, was an American actress and singer. She was best known for being a part of the group ‘The Mamas & the Papas’. A native of Maryland, she started singing and acting in her high school and relocated to New York in the early 1960s. In 1971, she came out with ‘Dave Mason & Cass Elliot’, the only album she released with Dave Mason. It charted at on the US Billboard chart. Then in November the same year, she reunited with the other members of The Mamas & the Papas to release the group’s final studio album ‘People Like Us’. Recommended Lists: Recommended Lists
