Works: The Complete 78rpm Solo Recordings, 1908-1945. Performer: Percy Grainger (piano). The earliest recordings date from 1908 – among them the cadenza from Grieg’s Piano Concerto, delivered by the 25-year-old Grainger with the supple, flickering poetry that was already a trademark. His playing impresses all the more for never needing to rush – witness a scintillating rendition of Debussy’s Toccata, made six years later. The distant, cope perspective of these early acoustic recordings is more than truthful enough to appreciate the gorgeous sound that Grainger evidently conjured from a piano at will. The later and clearer electrical transfers tell us more
It’s his complete surviving 78 recordings, a series that began in 1908 and ended in 1945. The earliest discs were made for the Gramophone Company in London, and the last for American Decca. Grainger was a charismatic pianist and also a discographic pioneer. For example, he recorded the Stanford-Grainger Maguire’s Kick on 16 May 1908 before he recorded the first movement cadenza from Grieg’s Piano Concerto, but the first disc of this set starts with the latter. This was a fine gesture, by both Grainger and the record company, as Grieg, a great friend of Grainger’s, had died the previous year. Later the sequence is re-jigged to allow a run of pieces by the same composer - the Grieg recordings of the 1917-24 period for instance run together, as indeed do Grainger’s own, though they weren’t all made at the same time.
Percy Aldridge Grainger (born George Percy Grainger; 8 July 1882 – 20 February 1961) was an Australian-born composer, arranger and pianist who lived in the United States from 1914 on and became a citizen in 1918. In the course of a long and innovative career, he played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century. Percy Grainger's tombstone "World famous composer and pianist". Between 1908 and 1957 Grainger made numerous recordings, usually as pianist or conductor, of his own and other composers' music.
