Damnesia dips back into Alkaline Trio’s 15-year output for most of its selections, reconsidering familiar material with an often-inspired touch. In the past, the punk-pop combo has traded in a jittery, melodically brisk sound that uses bursts of abrasion to keep its emotional pleadings from sounding like mere complaints. Adding to Damnesia’s impact is a pair of vigorous new tunes ( Olde English 800, I Remember a Rooftop ), along with a galvanizing, country-tinged cover of the Violent Femmes’ I Held Her In My Arms. Damnesia Alkaline Trio.
Alkaline Trio celebrated their 15th anniversary by proving that their heartbroken punk could hit just as hard in acoustic form. Even when caustic anthems like "We've Had Enough" and "Private Eye" are stripped of their customary distortion, frontman Matt Skiba's commanding voice makes them sound as defiant as ever.
For Damnesia, Matt Skiba, Dan Andriano, and Derek Grant pick a smattering of songs from seven of their albums, spanning from 2010’s This Addiction back to 1998’s Goddamnit!, and give them an intimate unplugged treatment with some broad arrangements. As well as performing lighter versions of old fan faves "Radio," "Private Eye," and "This Could Be Love," they attempt a cover of Violent Femmes' I Held Her in My Arms" and introduce two new tracks, I Remember a Rooftop and Olde English 800.
Ive always wanted an acoustic Alkaline Trio album and was quite happy with the end results here. The only song I thought didnt really work was Calling All Skeletons since that song just sounds so much better full band. dimsim3478 July 13th 2011. I liked the acoustic version of that song, but yeah, the standard version works so much better. craigy2 July 13th 2011.
