Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir (/də ˈboʊˌvwɑːr/; French: (listen); 9 January 1908 – 14 April 1986) was a French writer, intellectual, existentialist philosopher, political activist, feminist and social theorist. Though she did not consider herself a philosopher, she had a significant influence on both feminist existentialism and feminist theory.

Simone de Beauvoir's many books include The Second Sex and the novels She Came to Stay and The Mandarins. Through her analysis, Toril Moi showed how Simone de Beauvoir became the leading feminist thinker of the twentieth century, uncovering also the conflicts and difficulties that she faced as an intellectual woman in the middle of the twentieth century. It incorporates biography with literary criticism, feminist theory, and historical and social analysis, to fully explore her life in philosophy.

Simone e Bertrand de Beauvoir was born on January 9, 1908 in Paris to Georges Bertrand de Beauvoir and Franoise, ne Brasseur, the elder of two daughters. Her childhood and adolescence involve her sister Hlne (whom she calls Poupette) and her friend Zaza.
