It's this conceptual minimalism, the absence of jazz-like forms and structures, more than the actual sound of the album, that nudges The Headlight Serenade from jazz toward the ambient/electronic category. After all, it is still predicated on improvisation, and the bulk of it consists simply of piano, bass, and drums, readily recognizable as such even when electronically tweaked.

But while it's possible that the two groups might one day meet in the middle and even cross over into each other's aesthetic territory, Triosk's work on this CD is by no means imitative and is highly commendable in its own right. Triosk's putative leader Adrian Klumpes is a conservatory trained jazz pianist who brings a cerebral element to the music, mixing the muted, hypnotic repetition favored by The Necks with other more idiosyncratic elements.

Triosk, The Headlight Serenade. Tracks such as Lazyboat and Vostok take Triosk into the abstract sunset, while the less cerebral, more obviously performed pieces such as Not To Hurt You and Visions IV place the band somewhere between EST and the Necks. Triosk will probably groan about being compared to the latter - also Australian, also a trio - but it's unavoidable: the acoustic bass part on Intensives Leben is decidedly (and pleasurably) Necks-like.
