Tim Minchin: composer and lyricist for Matilda the Musical. I love that I asked the Dahls about Matilda in 2000 – a message in a bottle that bobbed around for eight years before washing up on the shore of the RSC. I love that the meeting I had on Earlham Street with Matthew Warchus took place 100 metres from the Cambridge Theatre, where Matilda now plays to 10,000 people every week. I love that the demo songs I sent to Matthew after our meeting were mostly from This Blasted Earth. I wrote the 10 songs for that show in a month – I never dreamed they'd live beyond that Christmas, beyond that show. The other source of demos was Somewhere, a musical.

Tim Minchin is the world's leading musical comedian. He wrote the music and lyrics for Matilda The Musical, staging in Auckland in August. Growing up in Perth, Minchin had never shown particular prowess at either music or comedy. But the path to a career in musical theatre wasn't clear. Minchin, 41, would spend the next decade working out how to package himself and his talents for public consumption.
