Caustic Defiance and Negative Element were two products of the Midwest in the early 1980s and converted their desolation and adolescent rage into tight, scratchy hardcore punk songs that, while fitting in well with the sound of the time, is nonetheless a raw, unrefined and yet enjoyable piece of work. Peoria, IL's Caustic Defiance provide the first baker's dozen of cuts here. Negative Element is the slightly elder band on this split, as Caustic Defiance formed from their ashes. Essentially a sloppier and jokier version of the sound that would be fleshed out and better thought out in Caustic Defiance, their side's interesting though a little less listenable. Tracks like "Anti-PacMan" and "What Ever Happened to Elmer Fudd?" get on a goofy plane and never look back.

Caustic Defiance/Negative Element-Split CD. Just when you thought all the early 1980’s output from Chicago bands had been put out there, along comes this release. Negative Element was a young, loud, and snotty hardcore band from the Chicago suburbs. Although they played many a show with such heavyweights as Big Black and Articles of Faith, they remained largely unknown outside their hometown. This CD will more than likely change that with such classics as “Anti-PacMan” and “Doughboy” featured here. Hard charging, slash and burn hardcore that will get your blood boiling.

A split album (or split) is a music album which includes tracks by two or more separate artists. There have been singles and EPs of the same variety, which are often called "split singles" and "split EPs" respectively. Split albums differ from "various artists" compilation albums in that they generally include several tracks of each artist, or few artists with one or two tracks each, instead of multiple artists with only one or two tracks each.
