The Beginning Having recently made his inaugural outing on Brainfeeder with Aphelion EP, British producer Ross From Friends aka Felix Clary Weatherall returns with his debut album on Flying Lotus’ label. The album also finds Felix recording his own voice for the first time, with the resulting tracks acting as snapshots of his personal life while recording. Every time I went to make music the things which would really grab me are the emotional things, and while I’m in that place I felt I could really focus on the track.

But with Family Portrait, Weatherall’s Brainfeeder full-length debut, he also pines for something else from the past: his own parents’ courtship and relationship to dance music. His father built his own soundsystem in the late 1980s, staging hi-NRG dance parties at various squats around London before embarking on a European trip with a friend of a friend who would one day become Weatherall’s mother. In looking back on electronic music’s history, Ross From Friends emulates some of its finest practitioners, albeit imperfectly. The slow, shaken bells on the title track bring to mind Four Tet’s Rounds, but without the same sort of wistfulness. And while Weatherall conjures the eerie, childlike chimes and subliminal whispers of Boards of Canada on . he can’t quite pull off their sense of the uncanny.

With artwork by Lee Marshall, Family Portrait will be released in late July on vinyl, CD and digital formats. It'll be the second Ross From Friends record for Brainfeeder, after April's Aphelion EP. Weatherall has a headlining live tour for Ross From Friends planned this fall, kicking off in Edinburgh on September 15th. Ross From Friends' debut album ‘Family Portraits’ paints a vibrant and touching of what dance music can mean to people. Most importantly, ‘Family Portrait’ packs that innate connection your mind and body should feel when allowing it to succumb to the hedonistic power of dance music. There are no dull moments, but if there’s even a brief drop in intensity, it should only be used to reflect on the energy you probably just felt.

Ross from Friends may have won the silly name sweepstakes of the late-2010s underground house scene, but like his peers DJ Seinfeld and DJ Boring, the quality of his music transcends the gimmickry. Family Portrait is his proper debut full-length, and it builds on past successes like the viral hit "Talk to Me You'll Understand" and The Outsiders (a double EP so good that it could've easily passed as a proper album), introducing new levels of complexity and emotional depth to his sound  . Family Portrait is an uncommonly original album, keeping listeners guessing while making a significant, sometimes unexpected emotional impact.

Despite this, when it pushes boundaries and dips its toe further into avant-garde territory, Family Portrait can be an immersive exploration of dance music.
