The Genius of Bud Powell, originally titled Bud Powell's Moods, is a studio album by jazz pianist Bud Powell, released in 1956 by Mercury, Clef, featuring two sessions that Powell recorded in 1950 and 1951. The album was re-released on CD by Verve in 1992, with two additional takes of "Tea for Two". The sessions also appear on The Complete Bud Powell on Verve (1994) box set. The two sessions mark Powell's fourth recording date as leader, following on from the February 1950 session for Jazz Giant.

In 1951, Bud Powell was still at the height of his considerable powers. Included here are two sessions from that year: a trio with Ray Brown and Buddy Rich (three takes of "Tea for Two" and a super-fast "Hallelujah") and eight solo piano tunes from a different date. On "Tea for Two," Rich's drumming brings out the charming show-off in Powell, and on "Hallelujah," Powell plays with a hysterical clarity. Oblivion" and "Hallucinations" are the most masterful of the eight solo cuts

In 1947, Verve issued The Genius of Bud Powell album, it was not an uncommon for record labels to use the epithet but in Bud Powell’s case it was more than justified. He is one of those pianists that have influenced just about every one that has followed in his wake. Born into a musical family in Harlem, on 27 September 1924, Bud Powell first started gigging in Coney Island, often playing at Canada Lee’s Chicken Coup and with Valaida Snow’s Sunset Royals. He also frequented Minton’s where Thelonious Monk took him under his wing. Powell’s first recordings with Cootie Williams and his Orchestra.
