He used to ask my grandmother to read the stories to him, over and over. Eventually he learned to read, and he was able to read them to her. The copy that they read together was the one that her mother, (my great grandmother,) read to me. When I was older, we had an exchange student from Spain, join our family. Her family became part of our family, and we became part of hers. The wording, the story itself, and the illustrations are totally delightful, and work together beautifully. Else Holmelund Minarik (September 13, 1920 – July 12, 2012) was an American author of more than 40 children's books. She was most commonly associated with her Little Bear series of children's books, which were adapted for television. Minarik was also the author of another well-known book, No Fighting, No Biting! Born in Fredericia, Denmark, Minarik immigrated to the United States at the age of four with her family. By 1940, Elsa had married Walter Minarik, who died in 1963.
