Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that's also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities. For instance, in Jainism, Diwali marks the nirvana, or spiritual awakening, of Lord Mahavira on October 15, 527 .

Diwali is India’s ‘Festival of Light’, a time when people come together to celebrate good conquering evil, light conquering dark. This celebration of new beginnings coincides with the Hindu New Year and the start of the new business year, so there are prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the god of wisdom and luck, for a successful year. It’s the biggest event in the Hindu calendar, and Sikhs and Jains celebrate similar festivals at the same time as Hindus celebrate Diwali. Deepavali is a festival of the Hindus that signifies the victory of good over evil  . Deep’ meaning earthen lamps justifies the sacredness of the festival. The festival of lights continues for five long days. The first day of the festival is called Dhanteras. The second day is the 'Choti Diwali'. Diwali falls on the third day while the fourth and fifth day of Deepavali is celebrated in a different way in various parts of India.

There's loads of fireworks, sweets & presents are exchanged and traditional ‘diya’ lamps are lit in the evenings.

The Diwali festival is India's biggest and most significant celebration of the year. Find out about it in this guide. This five-day festival, which is the biggest in India, honors the victory of good over evil and brightness over darkness. It celebrates Lord Ram and his wife Sita returning to their kingdom of Ayodhya, following Ram's and monkey god Hanuman's defeat of demon Ravan and rescue of Sita from his evil clutches (on Dussehra). On a personal level, Diwali is a time for introspection, to contemplate and dispel our own darkness and personal demons. Let light shine within yourself, and also shine this light outwards.
