The album entered the UK album chart at number 1 and has since sold over . million copies in the UK alone, being certified quadruple platinum. It was also a success in the US, where it was a top 30 hit and has been certified double platinum. Diva won Album of the Year at the 1993 Brit Awards, and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards the same year.

But the music is strangely muted and understated. In fact, the album almost works best as one integrated mood piece rather than a collection of individual songs. While Lennox succeeds in carving out a personality distinct from her Eurythmics days with Diva, one can't help but crave a shot of former partner Dave Stewart's musical muscle.

The term "diva" is an honorific to be bestowed, not a title to be claimed. That alone gets Annie Lennox's 1992 solo debut off on the wrong foot. I don’t think this particular album really show her real talent for vocalization as in her latter works, but that’s simply the material she was expected to sing in this album, and she did, but the material was not a challenge for such a talented lady. This album was your rather traditional pop music stuff, and fairly well done in its direction, but Annie Lennox could probably sing and vocalize anything, its in her blood, like fire and oxygen or water and Earth.
