The Hollywood All-Star Sessions chronicle an important part of Art Pepper's comeback in the late '70s, when the altoist was surmounting years of heroin addiction and imprisonment to play with renewed energy and an impassioned creativity.

His greatest work had already been documented several years earlier for Lester Koenig’s Contemporary label and only his final set of live recordings from the Village Vanguard would meet or exceed standards set forth by earlier artifacts. Meanwhile, Japanese producers engaged Pepper’s services for a series of all-star dates to feature West Coast players cutting standards under the nominal leadership of Bill Watrous, Jack Sheldon, Pete Jolly, Sonny Stitt, Shelly Manne, and Lee Konitz. These recordings were issued in Japan on the Atlas label, but never before released in this country until now. The Hollywood All-Star Sessions is a five disc set that gives us some memorable, if not downright essential material from Pepper’s later years.

Pepper is also the dominant soloist, in the heart-on-his-sleeve style of his second career (post-1974). His solo dramas are so sensitive to linear structure, including great care for registers, melodic elements, phrase contrasts  . Everyone sounds inspired on this session, and the Pete Jolly sessions are on a similarly high level.

Living Legend is a 1975 jazz album by saxophonist Art Pepper playing with Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden and Shelly Manne. This was Art Pepper's 'comeback' album, the first to be released after his long absence due to drug addiction and incarceration in San Quentin prison. Pepper had been finally released in 1966 and for a while only played tenor saxophone, showing how much of an influence John Coltrane had been on him in the intervening years.

Recorded in 1957, the set takes in both Pepper originals ("Holiday Flight," "Surf Ride") and choice standards ("Long Ago and Faraway," "Without a Song"). There's also a fine cover of the rare Bud Powell cut "Webb City. Topped off with excellent work by pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Chuck Flores, this collection is a must-have for all Pepper fans.
