Nabuma Rubberband's slow jams are perfectly sexy, but they lack originality. Even after repeated listens, the album's velvety sequence of Pretty Girls, Underbart, and Cat Rider fail to leave a lasting impression. Nagano’s beguilingly smoky voice has also lost a little bit of its allure, and when Little Dragon foray into already well-trod territory-there’s even a song called Paris, complete with breathy French lyrics-they invariably disappoint.

Unapologetically its own, Nabuma Rubberband continues Little Dragon’s journey into the unknown with comparative ease. The sonic explorations on Nabuma Rubberband are almost impossible to count. The album’s best tracks fit all three modes, and Nagano and her band never let one mood dominate over another. Little Dragon’s fourth LP is an unusually organic monster, less of a singular snapshot of the band, and more like a motion capture taken in a darkly lit room. On Nabuma Rubberband, there’s no motif to catch on to and dissect to infinity. Rather, it’s like a beautiful, elusive creature you get to watch for only a moment before it disappears into the dark again.

Swedish four-piece Little Dragon are a prime example. For almost two decades, since vocalist Yukumi Nagano met her future bandmates at high school in Gothenburg, they’ve been working hard on their sensuous mixture of trip hop, downbeat electronica and R&B. They’ve collaborated with everyone from Damon Albarn and Big Boi to SBTRKT and DJ Shadow. They’ve released three albums that have made them, little by little, a force to be reckoned with. And now, with album number four, their time might have come at last.

Regardless, Nabuma Rubberband is Little Dragon’s selfish record, and splendidly so. Some of the sweet moments in its strongest tracks, however, are lost in others, as is the nature of an album with standout tracks. Little Dragon have matured by enhancing the meaning behind sounds and voice; on Nabuma, the intense electronic experimentation is replaced by a stronger focus on Nagano, equipped with a heightened emotionality and moroseness.
