Complete your Charles Lloyd & The Marvels collection. Rainbow lives up to their reputation as the worst pressing plant in the United States. Blue Note and anyone who presses there does themselves and the artists a disservice. Blue Note especially should know better than to press there. I Long to See You feels more like a collaboration between Lloyd and Frisell than a leader date, which is sometimes problematic: these men can be overly deferential to one another. The album starts promisingly with a brooding read of Bob Dylan's "Masters of War" that threatens to explode at any moment. Frisell and Leisz (who have worked together a lot) take it through deep winding blues, building tension before Lloyd enters and carries it toward the outside before returning to blues, while Harland's circular drumming becomes somberly hypnotic

In 2015, iconic saxophonist Charles Lloyd continued his innovative trajectory into the upper spheres of jazz and the spiritual realms of wonder and beauty. He basked in a banner year that included receiving the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters honor and marking a triumphant return to Blue Note Records with his remarkable live album Wild Man Dance. At age 80 legendary Charles Lloyd shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to his New Quartet-most recently documented on Passin’ Thru (Blue Note Records, 2017)-he has collaborated with the Greek singer Maria Farantouri on Athens Concert (ECM, 2011); played duets with Quartet pianist Jason Moran on Hagar’s Song (ECM, 2013); and produced a long-form suite commissioned by the Jazztopad Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, documented on. Charles Lloyd (born March 15, 1938) is an American jazz musician. Though he primarily plays tenor saxophone and flute, he has occasionally recorded on other reed instruments, including alto saxophone and the Hungarian tárogató. Lloyd's band since 2007 includes pianist Jason Moran, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland. Charles Lloyd grew up in Memphis and was exposed to blues, gospel and jazz. He is of African, Cherokee, Mongolian, and Irish ancestry

The iconic saxophonist and recent NEA Jazz Master is in the company of a new band featuring guitarist, Bill Frisell and pedal steel master, Greg Leisz, along with his longtime quartet members bassist, Reuben Rogers and drummer, Eric Harland. The album also includes two remarkable guest vocal appearances by Willie Nelson and Norah Jones. This is a sumptuous collection of 10 songs that range from anti-war folk protests to traditional hymns to re-envisioned Lloyd originals from his earlier recordings.

soundbite of charles lloyd and the marvels song, "Masters of war"). SIEGEL: It ends with a 16-minute journey based on a Buddhist prayer. In between, Lloyd does folk songs and originals, and he collaborates with Willie Nelson and Norah Jones. TOM MOON, BYLINE: One complaint you hear about jazz goes like this - it can be hard to follow, especially when there's lots of notes flying around and not much melody. That's not the case with the latest from Charles Lloyd.

Lloyd credits "Masters Of War" to Bob Dylan. However, the tune is a traditional English "Nottamun Town", Dylan only provided new words. As this version is instrumental, it really should be credited as "Traditional", with Lloyd thus taking the income from it, not Dylan.A fine album.
