Alea iacta est ("The die is cast") is a Latin phrase attributed by Suetonius (as iacta alea est ) to Julius Caesar on January 10, 49 . With this step, he entered Italy at the head of his army in defiance of the Senate and began his long civil war against Pompey and the Optimates. It's also impossible to avoid the fact that Caesar was attacking the state, and as a patrician Roman this would have been very difficult for him, equivalent to beating up your father. He wouldn't have done any of this lightly. Finally he makes a decision, it's time to go, and he uses a gambling metaphor: he says 'Roll the dice', 'Alea jacta est'. Once the dice start rolling they cannot be controlled, even though we don't know what it is as the dice roll and tumble.

Alea iacta est - Il dado è tratto: the die is cast, the famous phrase attributed to Caesar while crossing the Rubicone river and declaring war to the senate. We generally use the translation, but the original form is just as famous. Alma mater - Madre che nutre: nurturing mother. The phrase has entered the Italian vocabulary as it is. Pecunia non olet - Il denaro non puzza: money doesn’t stink. Generally, the Latin form is used. Sic semper tyrannis - Così sempre ai tiranni: lit. as always to the tyrants, the phrase usually attributed to Brutus after stabbing Ceasar.

Alea iacta est is a variation of the phrase iacta est alea, which means in English: The die is cast, signifying that an irrevocable decision has been made. An idiom related to this saying is Crossing the Rubicon  . It is Plutarch who mentions that Caesar spoke these words in Greek. Some speculate that C. Asinius Pollio was present on the occasion and it was he that was the source of the story but there is little evidence for this. If Caesar translated the Greek into Latin he would have said 'iacta alea esto . let the die be cast'. 104 Views · View 4 Upvoters · Answer requested by. Gianni Jangaderop.
