Black on Both Sides is the debut studio album by American rapper Mos Def, released on October 12, 1999 by Rawkus and Priority Records. Prior to its recording, Mos Def had collaborated with Talib Kweli for the album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star in 1998, which raised high expectations for a solo effort by the former. Black on Both Sides features an emphasis on live instrumentation and socially conscious lyrics.

Squares On Both Sides is the musical project of Daniel Buerkner. His music is in between traditional singer-songwriter elements, almost classical arrangements and completely silent moments. The 27-year-old is recording his tracks all by himself, interweaving a wide range of instruments, such as acoustic and electric guitars, a harmonium, a piano and his withdrawn singing to create calm assemblages.

True, Black on Both Sides isn't flawless. If you don't like Tribe-style laidback beats, you may have a more difficult time getting into this. Mos Def's singing on tracks like "Climb" and "Umi Says" is a bit hard to stomach, too. And then there's the matter of his sporadic introductory speeches, which occasionally sound like the pseudo-prophetic ramblings of a guy who might benefit from one less hit from the bong. But this, honestly, is nit-picking.

After making a name for himself with a slew of indie singles, mix tape appearances, guest verses, and the Black Star LP, the mighty Mos Def ups the ante with his '99 solo debut. Intelligent lyricism abounds, challenging the listener to think as they bob their head.
