The aesthetic of Dark Lights Up was informed by a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville while she was on tour. Upon encountering the music of Roger Miller, she was really struck by how simple his production was, and how central his voice and how open the sound was on the recor. here aren’t a lot of layers, and the melody and his voice and the words were more beautiful for it.

Inspired by a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame while touring through Nashville, Eleni Mandell crafted her new album with a throwback sound reminiscent of Roger Miller and other legends of the form. Dark Lights Up was recorded in Los Angeles over the course of four days and is Mandell's 10th .

Mandell opens the new album with I'm Old Fashioned, where she lists all the old fashioned activities she loves, ranging from listening to record albums – the real kind, with needles touching spinning vinyl – to reading books. She later proves her love of the old fashioned (music-wise) with a really beautiful ballad, China Garden Buffet, which finds Mandell singing over an 'old fashioned' arrangement. The song strolls to an unhurried rhythm while Mandell's voice is accompanied by tinkling piano, jazzy guitar and soft trumpet lines. Such is certainly the case with Eleni Mandell and the music she's created with Dark Lights Up. These are songs that have all of the musical and lyrical elements found in the sort of songs we now refer to as 'standards. No, these songs likely won't end up on contemporary top 40 radio, where all women seem to want to sing about is their butts.
