Cheer-Accident's first album, Life Isn't Like That, was released in 1986, after which Drummond and Greenlees left the group. They were replaced by bassist Chris Block and guitarist Jeff Libersher. The group's second release, 1988's Sever Roots, Tree Dies, which was produced and engineered by the Phil Bonnet. Their 1990 EP, Dumb Ask, was produced by Steve Albini, and following this the group signed to British label Neat Records

CHEER-ACCIDENT (which had most definitely become a band by this point) had (oddly and instantaneously) found itself to be a a very formidable live entity; They were– right from their debut performance– a visceral rock machine. A little over a year later, this lineup released its first full-length (vinyl) album, entitled Sever Roots, Tree Dies.

The debut full length-album by Cheer-Accident, Sever Root Tree Dies, once again is a pretty different slice of music than what I have heard from them before.

The next lineup of CHEER-ACCIDENT consisted of bassist Chris Block and guitarist Jeff Libersher, whom Jones had met in the mid-'80s while attending Northern Illinois University. They recorded their first nationally distributed release, "Sever Roots, Tree Dies", with Phil Bonnet at Solid Sound Studios in Hoffman Estates, IL, from April through July of 1988. They released the album on their own label, Complacency, that same year. Other material from the session went on a cassette LP on Complacency called "Vasectomy". By 1991, CHEER-ACCIDENT had begun holding recording sessions for its fourth album, "Babies Shouldn't Smoke", in the upstairs studio of the Pete WAY room in Chicago.
