The major hits at the time of introduction were Tony Martin, Glenn Miller with Ray Eberle, and Tommy Dorsey with Frank Sinatra. It was also recorded by Billy Eckstine. The line For fools rush in where angels fear to tread was first written by Alexander Pope in his 1711 poem An Essay on Criticism. The phrase alludes to inexperienced or rash people attempting things that more experienced people avoid. It has since entered the general English lexicon as an idiom. The phrase, in full or in part, has been used multiple times since 1711. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread is used by Edmund Burke in his work Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790).

Billy Eckstine (8 July 1914 – 8 March 1993), born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA as William Clarence Eckstein. He changed the spelling to Eckstine after a club owner said the original spelling was "too Jewish". Eckstine was an American jazz singer and bandleader who also played trumpet, valve trombone, and guitar. He also performed briefly as Billy X. Stine. His nickname was Mr. B. Although best known as a singer, his openness to new music made him a strong influence on modern jazz, particularly bebop, as he gave employment to many of the musicians who founded the style.

He explained: "The story of the song is in the first four lines: 'Fools rush in where wise men never go, but wise men never fall in love, so how are they to know?' But most fellows chop it up: 'Fools rush in (breath) where wise men never go (breath) but wise men never fall in love (breath) so how are they to know?' But if you do it that way, nobody follows the story. Sinatra recorded this again in 1947 (Frankly Sentimental), with an Axel Stordahl arrangement, and in 1960 (Nice 'n' Easy), with a Nelson Riddle arrangement. Doris Day recorded it as a duet with Andre Previn for their 1962 album, Duet. This inspired the title for the 1997 romantic comedy Fools Rush In, starring Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek. A decade later he would record a cover of "Fools Rush I. The indie duo She & Him (Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward) covered this in 2010. More songs from Rick Nelson.
